Washi Tape. What exactly is it? In the simplest of terms, it is a translucent, removable, repositionable, decorative tape. From Japan.

Think masking tape.

But, mo'h sheer and delicate.  

Definitely mo'h purdee!

Infinitely mo'h fun!

A popular use for Washi Tape in Japan is to adorn gift packaging.  Here in the US, we paper-crafting chicas have become rather Washi Tape CRAAAY-ZEEEE! We're drooling over it, collecting it, petting it but when it comes time to actually DO something with it, sometimes, we hit a road-block. Boo.

Quick share & news about a coming online workshop!

Hope you had a lovely Mother's Day--Just poppin' in to share a design I created for my daughter, who is expecting her first baby! :)

The design is pretty straight forward--computer generated the saying as I didn't have a stamp that said exactly what I wanted. Of all the quotes on motherhood that I've ever read, this one has always been my favorite. :)

Just put a smidge of washi tape from my stash to underscore the quote, and a heart punched from a pretty pinkish red paper. It's rare I make a card without any stamping on it at all, but this one just went that direction, and I just rolled with it. LOL!

By the way, if you are intrigued by washi tape and want to learn how to use this yummy stuff, Studio Calico is offering an online workshop, with the adorable Megan Hoeppner at the helm, and I'm excited to be a contributor to the class, along with several other gals who are just as addicted to the stuff as I am! WOO HOO!!! There are going to be some awesome ideas shared in this class--can't wait to see what the other contributors have done!

We're already in week two of FOLD IT, POP IT, FLIP IT, ZIP IT!  I am getting such a kick out of seeing awesome creations popping up that have been inspired by the class--I get the biggest smile when I see them!

5MQ - Good Times!

 

 

Super, and I mean SUPER busy getting ready for class to start Monday so I only have time for a quick share today--realized I had forgotten to show this little gem off that I also made at the retreat last month. Could this *be* any easier?! (best Chandler Bing voice)

Just dabbed some Memento Dew Drops against an acrylic block, and picked up the color with my water brush and slopped some stripes of color down to make a rainbow on some smooth watercolor paper (similar to my smooth Bristol I love so much)  my buddy Lisa and I found at Archiver's that day.

Stamped the darling bike with Archival Jet Black, added a little strip of Washi tape and mounted it to a plain white card front. This one's a 4 bar note card (3.5 x 5"). I coulda' made a boat load of these, I do declare! I borrowed the sentiment at the retreat, so I don't have a source for it.

Oh, and BTW, you might wanna take note of this: Apparently, if you tag or categorize a creation like this as a "5 minute quickie", those "sex hotline" companies will contact you via email and ask that you remove it. Because you're infringing on their trademark.

 

True story.

LOL! I had been dying to play with this Lawn Fawn set so I took it with me on the retreat--I just love the mailbox and other fun elements in the whole set!

I'm also havin' a love affair with Hero Arts White Embossing Powder on colored card stock. Makes me so happy! Who knew embossing powder could have such an effect on one's mood, eh?!

Cut a slit in the mailbox so I could tuck the wee l'il letter in. CUTENESS!!

Have some news to share later today--could have something to do with this. Mebbe. Just sayin'... *wink*wink*

Happy Mundane!

So Retro (playing with fun new stamps & my Washi tape addiction, Part 3)

OK, so I was on a roll, doncha' know. Ideas to try just kept poppin' into my head...

Like this...

Just white embossing the typewriter from So Retro onto colored card stock, with a back-drop of Mister Huey's Custard... Thought the paper airplane from the Lawn Fawn set looked so cute as an accent!

And, this...

 

 

On this one I actually intended to use the star stickers as "masks" when I misted and then remove them, but I forgot to neutralize the adhesive on the back a little and they were stuck down pretty good. So, they had to stay. But, I rather like it, so deviating from the original plan is not necessarily a bad idea.  LOL!

The black foam alphabet stickers are by American Crafts that I picked up when we took a field trip to Archiver's.

And, this...

Here the cameras stamped in London Fog take a back-seat, but still provide a nice supporting role, allowing the red camera to POP.  Unfortunately, the Red Star patterned Washi Tape is part of a Cath Kidston set that is no longer in production.

And, this...

Can't tell in the pic, but I stamped the glasses with Memento Ladybug Red, watercolor them softly and then highlighted the lenses with Glossy Accents--so cool! I just thought they looked so cute with the Maya Road Eye Charts!

Oh, and this, too...

The last one was stamped onto some smooth watercolor paper my buddy Lisa & I found at Archiver's, by tapping Memento Dew Drops onto an acrylic block and just creating "swaths" of watercolor with a waterbrush. Don't mess yer dress, but I think painting OUTSIDE the lines looks more artsy. *grin*

Spring Garden (playing with fun new stamps & my Washi tape addiction, Part 2)

OK, so I didn't bring any patterned papers with me to the retreat. BUT, a sweet new friend across from me had some 6x6" pads, and shared some! The Brioche Paper by Memory Box had this perfect pattern in colors that matched the floral tape I'd brought with me. Unfortunately, the floral Washi tape shown above is no longer being made by Cath Kidston.  Boo.

The Spring Garden set has the CA-YOOT-EST wellies, and I thought they would look darling if I paper pieced them, so that's what I did with the right facing boot, to make a pair. The boot in the foreground was popped up for dimension. I was a little hesitant with the black & white diagonal striped Washi tape--kind of an unlikely combination, I suppose, but it just seemed to work, and I think I let out a squeal, LOL!

Another sweet new friend from across the room shared some manila tags she'd brought, and I used that to stamp and watercolor the tulip from the Spring Garden set (I just tapped some water-based dye inks against an acrylic block and picked up color with my waterbrush to paint. I love Dew Drop size pads when I travel because I can easily take a lot of colors with me). 

What looks like polka dot ribbon is actually Washi tape folded in half on itself, and used the same way ribbon would have been on the tag. But, it lays so nice and flat--no bulk when mailing!  A little more of that floral Washi Tape on the tag ties all the elements together with color.

Love the overall feminine/pretty look these ended up having! *happy sighing*

Note: The Hero Arts set with the "feel better soon" sentiment has been retired. *sob*  It was one of my faves and most oft-used because I just loved the little tiny sentiments that fit for so many different occasions.
